Hello and welcome to the Nodehill Literacy blog 'Wonderful Writing.' The purpose of this blog is to encourage pupils to up level their written work. Once the skills are learnt, it is relatively easy to improve written texts. We would appreciate feedback and ideas - hope you enjoy the site! This blog is moderated. Don't forget - no email addresses, only use your first name. Blog author - A. Moran.
Have you ever written a boring piece of work? Was it boring because you didn't have the skills to make it better? Would you like to learn these skills? There are just four easy steps! Then why not download this help sheet to get you started?
Do your sentences always start with the same thing? If they do, they shouldn't!! Have a look at this SENTENCE OPENERS sheet and see if they will help you.
Another way of making your written work more interesting and exciting is to use HELPFUL CONNECTIVES. Instead of writing 'It was a hot day and I went home for tea' try 'It was a hot day so I went home for tea'. This sheet contains a few connectives but it isn't exhaustive!
A good way to up level your written work is to use AMBITIOUS VOCABULARY. Instead of writing 'big' try 'enormous', instead of writing 'she said' try 'she shrieked', instead of writing 'it was a hot day' try 'the sun's rays baked the ground like an oven.' Get the idea?
Most school children have heard of Ros Wilson's Punctuation Pyramid. Here is the pyramid, with a few additions - using good punctuation will ALWAYS improve your writing!
